Our Language Ambassadors have been busy sharing games from around the world with pupils across the school. Through these activities, they have celebrated different cultures while helping others learn new languages and ways of playing together.

One of the games introduced was the strategic game Mancala, which is widely played across West Africa. Pupils enjoyed thinking carefully about their moves as they tried to outplay their opponents. Another activity was hopscotch using Roman numerals, where children practised recognising numerals while taking part in a familiar playground game.

The ambassadors also organised a competitive round of Pañuela, a lively game played using Spanish numbers, which brought lots of excitement and teamwork. Finally, everyone joined in with a well-loved jumping game popular in the UK –

“England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales…” – a playground favourite that had pupils laughing and cheering.

Our Language Ambassadors have worked incredibly hard to lead these activities. By sharing games from different parts of the world, they have helped celebrate culture, encourage curiosity, and show compassion within our school community.

They discussed key priorities, made thoughtful decisions about spending, and allocated budgets to different elements of their plans. Throughout the session, pupils demonstrated creativity and critical thinking as they generated ideas, negotiated choices, and justified their decisions. The activity not only strengthened their teamwork and problem-solving skills but also encouraged them to think practically about balancing ambition with financial constraints. Thank you to Tamryn Lambson for leading the session.

Highlights included dancing with professional performers and getting an up-close look at real costumes and pointe shoes.

The Gateway Academy is celebrating another year of exceptional success, with students achieving some of the highest results in the academy’s history. Performance across many subjects including Maths and English has significantly exceeded the national average, underlining the Academy’s continued commitment to academic excellence. The Academy’s Attainment 8 score — which measures how well students perform across eight key subjects — was above the national average, reflecting the strong progress made by students in both academic and creative areas. This means that Gateway students, on average, achieved higher grades across a broader range of subjects than many of their peers nationally.

Headteacher Grainne McLaughlin congratulated the Year 11 cohort on their achievements and praised their dedication:
"I congratulate our 2025 Year 11 students for the outstanding progress and success they have achieved during their time with us. I am proud of our students; their determination and ambition make them an inspiration to our academy and wider community."

Ms. McLaughlin also paid tribute to the wider academy community:
"Such success would not have been possible without the commitment of our exceptional staff, the support of parents and carers, and the encouragement of our community. Together, we have created an academy where young people excel academically, creatively and on the sports field.”

Viki Reid, CEO of the Gateway Learning Community (GLC), also commended the students:
"What a wonderful day for our Year 11 students and their families. I am extremely proud of the excellent GCSE results they have achieved. This success is a reflection of the hard work and resilience they've shown both in their academic studies and across their wider achievements. It is also a reflection of our brilliant teachers, our inspirational leaders, and all their parents and carers who have supported them to consistently improve upon their best. We are confident that they will go on to achieve incredible things personally and become active and thriving citizens."

The Gateway Academy’s strong results highlight the academy’s growing reputation for academic achievement and student success, both locally and nationally.

Their live performance was even more special as they were joined by 30 young musicians from Kinetika Bloco — an organisation some of the band members were part of as children. This added an extra layer of energy and spectacle to the show.

What an inspiring moment for our own Bloco players, showing them the incredible possibilities that lie ahead and motivating them to keep practicing and embracing every musical opportunity that comes their way!
