Youth Action, GLC Personal Development - Spring 1 Meeting

The Gateway Learning Community empowers students by involving them in decision-making both within the school and the wider community. We believe that giving pupils the opportunity to share their views and take part in decisions makes them feel valued and respected, which in turn encourages them to take ownership of their education and school environment.
Our five personal development groups, made up of pupils from across the trust, meet regularly to discuss important issues and explore possibilities for change. These groups focus on: Telling Our Story, Creating Our Futures, Protecting Our Planet, Thriving, and Solving Our Problems. Through partnerships with local and national organisations, we aim to create a more supportive and enriching educational environment that benefits all.
By bringing together various partnerships, the community can create a richer, more supportive, and effective educational environment that benefits everyone involved. This collaborative approach not only enhances learning outcomes, but also strengthens the understanding between the school and the wider community.
This week:
- All Telling Our Story: The Arts Council pupils are continuing to plan for the GLC Competency Day on March 21st, providing students with the chance to explore cultural arts and creativity.
- All Creating Our Futures: Pupils are preparing for Careers Week starting February 3rd, with guest speakers from a range of careers, including architects, psychologists, vets and professionals from organisations such as the Arts Outburst, Essex and MET Police, and West Ham Ladies.
- All Protecting Our Planet: The Eco Warriors are in the early stages of planning for the 2025 Eco Community Festival, with a planning meeting on February 3rd bringing together community partners and students.
- All Thriving: In partnership with Kinetika and the Wellbeing Ambassadors, pupils are organising Wellbeing Walks in line with this year’s theme, ‘Beach of Dreams.’
- All Solving Our Problems: Head pupils from across the trust have been learning about the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and debating the importance of various rights.
We are grateful for Ormiston’s continued support and funding, which enables us to carry out these projects.
